Hirers are making basic mistakes in the way they engage with job applicants and risk losing out on talent, according to new research published today by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).
 
The candidate strikes back explores the changing relationship between jobseekers and hirers. It argues that businesses need to do more to compete for candidates, and that people looking for new jobs have more power due to a high number of vacancies. The research found:  
 

A survey of 158 HR & Resourcing Professionals representing over 200,000 hires a year;

• 45% reported they struggled to find the specialist hires they needed via their Preferred Supplier List
• 64% of respondents had rejected a suitable candidate from a non-preferred agency,
• suggesting that candidate suitability is directly linked to a Preferred Supplier List

As part of the government’s Red Tape Challenge initiative to remove unnecessary burden, it’s now been confirmed by Ministers that from 8 June 2015, DVLA will no longer issue the paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence. This means, existing paper counterparts will no longer be valid and drivers are being advised to destroy their counterpart after this date.

Drivers who hold a paper only driving licence (issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998) remain valid and should not be destroyed.

So how will drivers check their driver record when the counterpart is gone?

From 6 April 2015, the speed limit for HGVs travelling on single and dual carriageways in England and Wales will be increased.

Following consultation and announcements made last year, the national speed limits for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes, travelling on a single carriageway will increase from 40mph to 50mph. The speed limit for HGVs over 7.5 tonnes, travelling on dual carriageways will increase from 50mph to 60mph.

1. Stand up straight. Whether meeting with potential clients, negotiating with suppliers or interviewing job applicants, projecting an air of confidence helps. Eye contact, good posture and a clear voice (no mumbling) communicate that someone is trustworthy, competent and a good risk.

This year saw the centenary of our Boys and Girls from Britain entering one of the costliest conflicts in history – the first World War – with fighting continuing until the 11^th November 1918, Armistice Day. Here is a short poem that brings everything we are now to light.

As expected the government is planning to proceed with a new regulation, to ensure that employment agencies and businesses should have to advertise jobs locally, if they also intend to advertise for foreign workers to work in UK jobs.

The new requirement, which the government hopes to bring into force by the end of this year, will prohibit agencies from advertising UK jobs in the European Economic Area, unless the jobs are also advertised in English in Great Britain (GB) at the same time, or if the job has already been advertised in GB for at least 28 days beforehand.
